Patients consider rhinoplasty for a number of different reasons. Many are unhappy with the contour and appearance of their nose either as a result of hereditary factors or previous traumatic injuries. Other patients desire to correct nasal structural problems that interfere with their breathing. In a large number of cases functional and cosmetic issues intertwine and overlap.
Modern rhinoplasty surgery for most patients involves attempting to solve both cosmetic and functional issues without giving the patient an obviously operated appearance. Surgeons are usually also very interested in preserving a nasal shape that is very much in harmony with a patient's natural facial features and ethnic heritage.
Accomplishing these goals begins within an in depth analysis of each patients nasal appearance and functional problems. Photographs and computer simulations are used to illustrate to the patient the findings and proposed surgical changes. It is very important for the surgeon and patient to be in perfect agreement on the operative plan and treatment goals.
Rhinoplasty surgery is performed under a general anesthetic in an outpatient surgery setting. Patients require 2 weeks or more before they can return to average work duties. The return to contact sports activities such as football or basketball may need to be delayed for at least 6 weeks.
